Sean Bosman
April 2025
Born in South Africa and raised between there and New Zealand, Sean Bosman is a visual artist with a BFA in Sculpture from the University of Canterbury. Having immigrated to Canada in 2017, he now lives and works on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations in Vancouver.
His practice explores “in-between” states of mediums, and how our histories can be re-examined through both the traditional materials and processes of our past, and the modern processes of our present. By layering, fragmenting, and reconstructing imagery through new approaches to oil painting, he examines the fluid boundaries between historical techniques and contemporary digital processes.
My stay at the SAR brought with it exploration, motivation, rest and community in a wonderful mix that leaves me feeling gratitude for my time there and hopefulness to return soon.
Being able to wake up and get to work in such a beautiful place and with such enthusiastic support from the other artists and the wonderful residency manager, Ali, allowed me to push my practice in new and unexpected directions. In being given that time and space to be slow and thoughtful, and the safety to be bold, it's hard not to begin each day at the cabin excited to walk down those studio stairs.Sean Bosman, Testimonial
