Michael Hepher
October–November 2024
Michael Hepher is a celebrated multidisciplinary artist based in Fernie, British Columbia, known for his vibrant oil paintings, expressive relief prints, and impactful public art. With over two decades of creative exploration, Hepher has developed a distinctive style marked by bold color palettes, rich textures, and a deep reverence for everyday life and landscapes.
Hepher is the founder of Clawhammer Press, a historic printmaking studio where he merges traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design. His hand-carved, hand-printed works have been showcased internationally, including exhibitions at the Hamilton Wood Type Museum in Wisconsin, 20for20 in Austin, Texas, and The Art of Protest in London, UK.
His public art includes the monumental 96-foot mural All Kinds of Beauty in downtown Fernie, a vibrant tribute to community and place. Solo exhibitions such as Backroads BC, Living Colour (2023), and most recently Where the Three Winds Meet (2025) at Elevation Gallery, reveal his ability to translate the soul of a place into powerful visual narratives.
Through every medium, Hepher’s work reflects a profound connection to the people, stories, and geography of British Columbia—inviting viewers to see the familiar in striking new ways.
My time at SAR was remarkable in a number of ways but the most significant was the ability to find focus away from the day-to-day needs of home. I very quickly settled into the rhythm of sleep, coffee, work, eat, sleep. I appreciated the non-invasive way the staff at SAR offered optional group opportunities without pressuring anyone into participating, which allowed the wide variety of artists there to have support and community when needed, but enough space to work quietly and undisturbed when needed. The focused time allowed me to produce a solid start to a body of work that would become a solo show (Where the Three Winds Meet • Elevation Gallery, Fernie, BC.) in February 2025 and it was beautiful to drag some of the ethos of that valley back to my home town. The energy and the connection of those pieces really allowed people to see a feel of what I learned during my time. There is so much to explore and be inspired by (literally) right out the door, as well as up and down the valley. The facilities are clean, well-maintained, and downright luxurious compared to some other residencies. Hosting 5 artists at a time is a unique experience with a significant number of variables, but the staff have found a great balance here. By the end of my six weeks there it was starting to feel like a home of sorts, and I am definitely planning my next visit.
