Similkameen Artist Residency Cabin East Side

The Similkameen Artist Residency takes place in a large, three-level log building that houses both artists’ accommodations and studio spaces. The project is situated at the base of a mountain within a unique landscape a mile from the Similkameen River.

Qualifications:

SAR welcomes artists and curators from across Canada and internationally. As this is a self-directed residency, we encourage applicants from a wide variety of artistic disciplines and backgrounds to apply. We are seeking artists or curators with a BFA, MFA, or equivalent experience, who can demonstrate a strong and committed practice.

We are ideal for a range of practices such as writing, sound art, film, video, digital art, textiles, painting, drawing, photography, sculpture (with simple electric or hand tools), and DIY printmaking.

Please note: We are not suited for practices that require machinery, welding, kilns, access to a lot of water or an industrial sink, or practices that involve strong smells that might infringe on the work of other artists working in adjoining spaces. Please inquire if you have material questions/concerns.

Transportation and Materials:

Participants are responsible for personal expenses including transportation, food, and material costs. The Residency is approximately a four-hour drive to Keremeos from Vancouver by car or 80 minutes south of Kelowna. As SAR is located on Highway 3, having access to a vehicle is highly encouraged because although the town of Keremeos is only 4 km away, the busy Highway makes it dangerous to walk however there is a trail on one side of the highway for the majority of the way to town.

There is a bus that services between Vancouver and Keremeos twice a week, and an airport in Penticton (30-minute drive away).

There is one bike on-site for residents to use.

Accessibility:

SAR functions out of a former B&B. As the bedrooms are located on the upper level accessed through stairs, the live-in residency is not wheelchair accessible at this time. For all other inquiries regarding accessibility, please contact us at: sar.info@simartres.com
