Sadie Gilker (they/she) is an avid embroiderer, painter, and designer. Their work is grounded in explorations of the texture of violence, memory, and the natural world. They hold a Master's from Concordia University, where they explored performances of violence in public spaces in Northern Ireland from the interdisciplinary lenses of: Urban Planning, Performance Studies, and Irish Studies. This work scaffolds their current art practice, where they are exploring the sound of silence, space, and memory via the history of embroidery. Sadie Gilker grew up in Tiohtià:ke (Montreal) and currently resides on the traditional and unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations in so-called Vancouver.
“I cannot emphasize how beneficial SAR was to my arts practice and general well being. Being able to have the time and space to explore the beautiful grounds and the Similkameen was an experience that will continue to shape my art for the coming years, and probably my lifetime. I came out to the residency to explore the sound of silence using embroidery as my medium. This project sought to explore the history of silence and violence and the devaluing and separation of embroidery from the fine arts sphere. As I settled into the residency, the project has begun to shift and take on a new life as the land began to tell me different stories. As I explore(d) the threads presented to me at the cabin and surrounding environs, the work that has begun to emerge is one of longevity, pathways, resilience, and resistance. Something that mirrors the long history of embroidery and the rugged terrain of the valley. I look forward to letting the land guide me in this project and seeing where it takes me. The studio spaces are set up to encourage play, experimentation, and joy. Mine overlooked trees and sage bush, which brought me a deep sense of calm while I was creating. The abundance of time and space allowed me to try out different techniques and bring my practice to the next level. The log cabin is warm with creative energy from an ever rotating group of talented artists.
Additionally, the town of Keremeos is has a vibrant community of artisans that I found to be a wonderful source of inspiration. Being in touch with artists in the cabin and in the town rekindled a fire in my heart.”
