June 2025

Iranian Canadian visual artist Mohadese Movahed focuses on painting as the core of her studio practice. She earned her BFA from the University of Science and Culture in Tehran, Iran, and completed her MFA at the University of Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, in 2020. Now based in Vancouver, Movahed teaches at Vancouver Film school (VFS) and has exhibited her work nationally and internationally including at Art Mûr in Montreal, Inselgalerie in Berlin, CICA in Vancouver, Shirin Art Gallery in Tehran, Two Rivers Gallery and The Reach Gallery Museum in British Columbia. She is a recipient of the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation grant and a "Rising Star" awardee of the CICA Vancouver & Jelina Couture International Art Awards 2025. Working across painting, drawing, printmaking and collage, in her work, Movahed explores the psychology and politics of built environment and its complex dynamics through visual elements drawn from her cultural memory and lived experience. In her work, she asks: How do systems of control and power shape our understanding of identity and space, and how do we, in turn, respond and reshape our surroundings?

“The Similkameen Artist Residency is the perfect place to slow down, reflect, and reconnect with your creative practice. The bright and beautiful cottage offers artists a comfortable living space alongside a well-equipped studio, with fresh air and inspiring views just outside the window. I felt incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to work and create while surrounded by the stunning view of mountains and unique landscape of the Similkameen Valley and Keremeos.

Ali is such a warm, welcoming, and thoughtful host who goes out of their way to ensure every artist has a meaningful and fulfilling experience. I can’t wait to return to this magical place!”
