Marina Haruki Ross

May 2025

Marina is a multi disciplinary artist who lives and creates on the unceded territories of the xwməθkwəy̓əm, Skwxwú7mesh, and Səl̓ílwətaɬ Nations. Her practice focuses on natural environments, its histories, and interactions with the Capitalocene. She explores what it means to be ‘connected’ to the land as a mixed-race settler and how her upbringings shape her perspectives. Her recent printmaking practice encompasses discarded objects, natural materials, collage, and origami - capturing the spaces between biotic beauty and industrial obstructions. She holds a Fine Arts Diploma from Langara College and a Bachelors of Fine Arts from Emily Carr University.

I am deeply grateful to have attended the Similkameen Artist Residency in May. The sage-covered hills, mountains, flowing rivers, and wildlife of the region was an inspiring and grounding setting to retreat from the city. The log cabin was comfortable and cozy with a calm atmosphere. The studio space was well-equipped which allowed me to explore, reflect, and dive deeper into my artistic practice, helping me reconnect with what is important to me. Having the space and time to reset and focus after finishing my degree was truly a privilege. The long term Artist-In-Residence and house manager, Ali, was extremely welcoming and provided opportunities for all of the artists to share our work, connect, and engage in meaningful discussions. The two weeks I spent here was a magical experience I’ll always cherish.
