Ceilidh Munroe (she/her) is a Jamaican-Canadian visual artist living and working on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations in Vancouver. She works primarily in print media with a focus in relief and monotype printing, although this does not exclude experiments with other media. Ranging from mixed-media installations to painting, Munroe’s approach to making work ventures beyond conventional materials through engagement with experimental methods of exploring traditional media. Her work is an exploration of diverse mediums and themes, guided by a commitment to the physicality of creation, a celebration of joy, and a reimagining of established artistic traditions.

I feel hard pressed to pick a favourite aspect of my time in the Similkameen valley; everything comes together perfectly there to encourage doing exactly what you need to be doing at any given time. I loved the walks around the property and the variety of things to pick up and look at.

I loved the supportive environment and making beautiful meals with new friends. I loved sitting in my studio with the doors wide open to let in the unseasonably warm weather. I loved walking along the river, both the paths and the riverbed itself. I loved learning how to whittle at the local squash court. I loved walking through my fellow artists’ studios to see what they’re working on throughout the month. I loved the freedom to sit down and work whenever it felt like the right thing to be doing. I loved seeing the area waking up for spring.

When I think back on my month it seems everything that happened was just right. Just the right amount of productivity, exploration, adventure, goofiness, sunshine, and sleeping. Thanks to everyone who worked hard to make the residency such an easy place to find what I needed, I hope my path winds back through the log house soon.
